Prince (PC001VT)

Prince photographer Virginia Turbett

Catalogue No: PC001VT Artist(s): Prince Location: Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands Date: 29th May 1981 Era: The 1980's Edition: Rockarchive Edition 50 Print type: Giclée Print Paper type: Archival 310gsm cotton based rag paper

Prince posing backstage at the Paradiso, Amsterdam during his Dirty Mind Tour in 1981.

Virginia Turbett recalls, “I worked as a freelance photographer for Sounds Magazine and this session was the first time I worked alongside journalist, Tony Mitchell. I knew more about the Paradiso Club than I did about Prince, who I’m ashamed to say I knew absolutely zero about. This wasn’t unusual as I often only got a few hours notice of a photo session with no time or technology to listen to their back catalogues.

I very quickly realised that I was witnessing someone extraordinary and remember thinking that this must be something like seeing Hendrix (which I never did). I was a big fan and had been going to gigs since I was 12 years old but had never seen anyone play guitar like Prince.

The gig was incredible and Prince was wild, hot and incredibly sexy. After the gig, I went backstage and there was just one other photographer there with Prince standing against a white, brick wall outside the dressing room. I can’t remember how long I got but it wasn’t long - I took just 20 frames of Prince backstage.”

This print is from a limited edition of 50. It is numbered, signed by Virginia Turbett and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
