Virginia Turbett

Virginia Turbett's photographs captured a wealth of musical, social and cultural images from the period covering Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, New Romantics, skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae and the and fans, style and fashion of the time. She created images of world famous artists like the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Prince as well as celebrities like Andy Warhol and political figures of the time.

In December 1981, The Face magazine ran a spread called “Punk Rock: 5 Years On.” Virginia was sent out into the field to photograph/interview any punks she came across. The magazine didn’t specify how to date those “5 years” precisely but it does happen that “Anarchy in the U.K.” was released in late November of 1976, so we can make it that.

Speaking about a shoot in 1982 with UK pop girl band Bananarama for Smash Hits, Viginia recalls the event, "Journalist Mark Ellen and I took them around London in a chauffeur driven limo," she recalls. "My main memory of the day is that they spent a good deal complaining about how they hated everything that they were asked to do!"

Her photographs of that era document a radically changing and exciting time in the music industry.
