Not only is Horace Panter ('Sir Horace Gentleman') bass player for The Specials, he is also a professional artist whose acclaimed work has been exhibited throughout the UK. Influenced by the pop art movement and inspired by the work of Sir Peter Blake, his artwork reflects his love of music and popular culture.
Rockarchive are delighted to be able to offer a range of Horace's wonderful Blues & Jazz pop art prints. The mixed medium artworks combine collage and painting, and are influenced by aspects of naive folk art. They feature images of Charlie Parker, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Bo Didley and BB King.
Speaking in an interview with online magazince Ransom Note Horace said, "With the Blues (and Jazz) paintings I wanted to try and somehow express how the music impacted on me. I wanted to ‘paint music’. The Blues has a tremendous cultural significance on place, history and race. I wanted that to come through in the work. I didn’t want to just paint a portrait of Muddy Waters; I wanted to show his history, repertoire and socio-geographical influences (Chicago). The pictures came out of a love for the music."
