David Bowie performing a kick whilst onstage at the Spectrum, Philadelphia in April 1978.

Alan Messer recalls, "I was assigned to photograph Bowie for a cover story in Melody Maker, preceding “The Stage Tour” leg of his worldwide tour in England. We, a Melody Maker journalist, an RCA press officer and me, flew from London to Philadelphia to get the story. Upon arrival, we were told that Bowie preferred not to be photographed performing. I tried, in vain, to meet with him to discuss the situation.

"I will not miss a picture, so I smuggled my Nikon into the show by stuffing some parts into my cowboy boots and jeans and gave the rest of the camera bits to my compadres. Fortunately, Bowie's team gave us great seats. I got the photograph and it was published on the front page. I love David Bowie's energy in this picture. The show was fabulous. He was fabulous. My picture is the last verse of FAME. He didn't move much except for this kick at the end of Set One."

  • Print type

At Rockarchive we carefully select the best print-type to optimise each individual photograph. We have chosen to print this image as a giclée fine art print produced in our London studio.

A giclée print is the most popular way of producing great quality collectable prints in the digital age. It is produced is by scanning an original negative. The image is then outputed onto the chosen paper using specialist inks to make a beautiful archival print.

    Paper type

This natural white paper comes in a pleasant, warm shade of white and contains no optical brighteners. The exquisite surface texture gives the paper a lovely, delicate feel while at the same time lending it an artistic note. In combination with the high-gloss premium inkjet coating, it produces stunning print results with outstanding reproduction of colour and detail, deep blacks and perfect contrasts.
