The Fall were formed during the punk revolution in Prestwick, Greater Manchester in 1976. They were fronted by founder and vocalist Mark E. Smith who went on to establish himself as rock hero and whose drinking & fighting, as well as musical artistry, became legendary.
The Fall underwent numerous reincarnations with Mark E Smith being the only constant member. Other musicians involved with the band included Paul Hanley, Karl Burns, Marc Riley, Craig Scanlon, Brix Smith and Steve Hanley. Their music was characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar sound, circular bass lines and caustic lyrics.
From 1979 to 2017, they released thirty-two studio albums and were long associated with DJ John Peel who described their music as "they are always different; they are always the same.". Mark E Smith died in 2018 aged 60
