  • Oasis were supporting U2 in America. This picture was taken while Noel was singing ’Don’t Look Back In Anger’. Liam was watching him intently from the side of the stage and I was shooting pictures of him. Suddenly Bono loomed into view on the right and I quickly swopped focus from left to right. I was using a Nikon F5 and an 85mm lens. I think this is one of the best live images I've ever taken.

  • I’d already photographed sixteen shows on the Elevation tour and was ready for a rest. The day before I’d lucked into the unusual situation of having a live concert photo on the cover of The Boston Globe, and after a stressful week in Boston I was ready to take it easy the last night, and just get into the music, the reason I was there in the first place. I’d seen moments similar to this one before but never had it happened so perfectly right in front of me; I think I moved maybe four feet tops to get straight on to Bono and The Edge. I knew at the time I had something, but I had no idea I had this.

  • The photo of U2 (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jnr.) was taken on the roof of the Country Club Hotel ( now Montenotte Hotel - they have a selection of the images in their lobby) in Cork, Ireland on a cold February morning. This was my first job 'abroad' for the NME and I had never heard of U2. They did not yet have a record deal and this was one of their first interviews with a music paper. I went on tour with them from Cork through some small towns to Dublin. They played youth clubs and at some of the dates they supported a band that played the top 40 hits. You could tell even back then that they had something special about them though even if there were only a few dozen people watching them. This photo was used on the cover of their book 'U2 By U2' and also on their Greatest Hits CD/DVD called 'U218'.
