  • A large group of photographers were fighting to get a good shot of Mick Jagger during the first three opening songs of The Rolling Stones ’Bridges to Babylon’ tour. I dodged the crowd and quickly moved over to the extreme right of the large stage. At that precise moment, Keith Richards providentially turned towards my camera. Technically, a concert photographer often finds that the best images aren’t always obtained in front of the musician.
Please note, this print is now a considerable way through the edition. Due to this the remaining prints are a higher price. Enquire at your local gallery or email us for up to date information.

  • I won first prize in 1992 when I entered the Observer’s (Jane Bown) Portrait award with this picture of Charlie Watts. It was taken on a Hasselblad in his hotel room. To my delight Charlie wrote a letter to congratulate me. He signed it:
'C.R. Watts (drummer of the Rolling Stones.)'
 How modest is that?!
Representing the bedrock of rock, the drummer in the Rolling Stones has aged immaculately.

Please note, this finite fibre SG edition of 30 is almost sold out.
For information on the last remaining prints, contact the RA gallery (+44) 207 704 0598, or email us at info@rockarchive.com
In addition to the 30 fibre SG prints, 10 A0 or custom size digital Fine Art prints are also available of this image.
These will be the last prints made from this picture.
It is therefore the last chance for collectors to own the most important rock portrait in Jill Furmanovsky's archive and also the founding image of the Rockarchive Collective. The negative will be retired to the Rockarchive Print Bank.

  • This was my first stadium concert with at least 50 other photographers, all trying to get that unique shot. Playing Brown Sugar, The Rolling Stones stormed the stage, 11 minutes later, my first big concert was over. Most photographers put their equipment in their cars and returned with their tickets to watch the gig. I had neither a car, or a ticket, but I did have this incredible shot of Keith.
During the gig I was annoyed because I was with the photographers on the left side of the stage and Keith was on slide on his knees to the right side of the stage! Through my lens I saw him turn his head and look towards me, I clicked the shutter.
I personally like the look in his eyes and the handkerchief which looks like a rose. It is funny to see he is wearing ordinary All Stars.

  • Believe it or not this was my first Rolling Stones gig. I had photographed Mick, Charlie, Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman individually in the past but never as the greatest band on earth. So when I finally got to see them and shoot the first 3 songs like all the other press photographers I concentrated on getting a good picture of Kieth and this is it. Blue Keith, Reptilian Keith. His assistant bought one so I must have caught something special!

  • I heard The Rolling Stones were doing a gig at the Roundhouse. I didn’t have ticket or pass. Waving my camera I blagged my way in (you could still do that in 1971). Underfoot was compacted earth, an old farm cart was being pushed worryingly close to the packed crowd. I was able to get fairly close to the stage which had been set near the centre of the arena. Shooting from the floor over peoples heads with a 135mm lens on my Nikormat: hand-held, wide open aperture, two rolls of Tri-X pushed a stop or two; photography inspired by music. Here they are thirty six years on.

  • The Stones were a well oiled machine when they reached the Twickenham stage of the Stones Hot Licks Tour. We were ushered up to a lip just under the stage which enabled us to perch ourselves right on the edge of the stage, cameras at the ready. As the opening cords for Brown Sugar kicked in and the PA announced “Ladies and Gentlemen the greatest rock “n” roll band in the world the Rolling Stones” the place erupted. Mick Jagger flitted out like a dragonfly and worked every inch of the stage, confirming his status as the greatest front man around. Shortly afterwards Keef Richard ambled up to where I was, knelt in front of me, put his guitar on my shoulder and said “Nice shirt- Rock 'n' Roll Baby”. I forgot the 65,000 behind me and shot away. This is the kind of gig I’d always dreamt of doing- it was exactly how I hoped it would be.
