  • I’d loved Portishead’s music for years but never thought I’d be able to photograph them as it was looking like they would never make another album. But in 2008 they finally did.

I went to Paris to shoot them for the US magazine Filter. I’d gone over there a day early and picked out a few locations to shoot near where they’d be staying, but then on the day of the session I got a call to tell me Beth had missed her plane and we’d have to do the portraits by the TV studio in northern Paris where they were doing a recording that evening and I’d now only have a very short time with them. So all my planning had to be scrapped and I took a taxi up to the studio. As I had to work really fast I shot them outside in daylight. It was freezing cold that day in Paris but they were great and happy the session was still possible – just as long as they could keep their coats on.
