When I photographed John Coltrane at Newport his radical, free-form style left many people stunned.

I didn’t realise until years later that his pianist was his wife, Alice.  I photographed her as well as I liked the way she looked.

This was Coltrane’s last appearance at Newport.  Less than a year later, aged only 40, he was dead.
