    I've photographed Herbie Hancock a couple of times before and gave him a print of himself with Walllace Roney taken during the Miles Davis Tribute tour with Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. After the full band soundcheck - which I covered from front of house, Herbie was left alone running through some sections on the grand. I always want to try and get a different kind of picture - I knew this was the moment to ask his road manager if I might photograph from the end of the piano. A big ask - he checked - Herbie said o.k.
