  • Deepest Blue, consisting of Joel Edwards from sunny Hertfordshire and Matt Schwartz from sunny Israel came together briefly, rose like a ‘liquid phoenix’ to make an album and then disappeared if not in flames then quite speedily, though to reappear, I’m sure, in different incarnations. During their brief flight they made three or four singles, one of which was Is It A Sin. Although on the surface it was a typical pop song about love won and lost, the lyrics asked ‘was it a sin to be with some one else so soon after a break up?’ turning the usual pedestrian pop fare on its head. So a different approach to the break-up of boy and girl was needed. We wanted to suggest that one of the parties was out of the picture, i.e., had left the frame, walking from the edge of a cosy picture of togetherness into the real world of loneliness. It seemed a novel but poetic way of showing boy-leaves-girl. The sadness of separation seemed heightened both by the wintry sun slanting across the dunes, and by the sharp edges of the broken frame.
