Sade

Sade (Sade Adu) is the lead singer of British band Sade. She was born in Nigeria and raised in England. The band became known in the 1980s for its sophisticated mix of soul, jazz, and pop.

Their debut album, Diamond Life (1984), was a major success, featuring hit singles like “Smooth Operator” and “Your Love Is King.” The album showcased Sade’s velvety voice and the band’s polished, jazz-influenced arrangements, earning widespread critical acclaim and commercial success.

Sade’s music is characterised by its emotional depth, minimalistic production, and timeless themes of love, heartbreak, and resilience. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band released albums such as Promise (1985) and Love Deluxe (1992). Songs like “The Sweetest Taboo” and “No Ordinary Love” were widely recognised and contributed to the band’s success. Their music often includes simple arrangements and a focus on vocals and rhythm.

Sade has taken long breaks between releases. After a ten-year gap, the band returned with Soldier of Love in 2010. The album reached number one in several countries and won a Grammy Award. With only six studio albums released over four decades, each is unique, thoughtful and deliberate. Consequently, Sade has had a lasting impact on music through a consistent style and a focus on clear, direct expression.
