The Charlatans are a British indie rock band formed in the West Midlands in 1988. Emerging during the Madchester scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band became known for blending psychedelic influences and alternative rock with a distinctive British indie sound. The classic line-up consisted of Tim Burgess (vocals), Martin Blunt (bass), Rob Collins (keyboards), Jon Brookes (drums) and Mark Collins (guitar), and the group has remained one of Britain's longest-running and most respected indie bands.
The band's debut album, Some Friendly (1990), reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and featured the hit single "The Only One I Know", a defining song of the Madchester era. While many of their contemporaries struggled following the decline of the scene, The Charlatans successfully evolved their sound throughout the 1990s, incorporating elements of Britpop, alternative rock and psychedelic music while retaining the style that first brought them widespread recognition.
In 1996, the band suffered a significant loss when keyboard player Rob Collins passed away during the making of Tellin' Stories. Despite this, The Charlatans completed the album. Released in 1997, Tellin' Stories became one of their most successful albums, featuring standout singles including "One to Another", "North Country Boy" and "How High". Keyboardist Tony Rogers later joined the band, continuing the group's signature keyboard-led sound.
The Charlatans continued to record and tour throughout the 2000s and beyond, releasing a succession of well-received albums including Us and Us Only (1999), Wonderland (2001), Modern Nature (2015) and Different Days (2017). Following the passing of drummer Jon Brookes in 2013, the band once again demonstrated its resilience, continuing to perform and record while honouring the legacy of its long-standing members.
With a career spanning more than three decades, The Charlatans have earned a reputation for consistency, longevity and an ability to maintain their distinctive identity. Their catalogue continues to attract new audiences, while their live performances have secured their place as one of Britain's most enduring and respected indie rock bands.
